SUMMARY:Brent Biennial 2025: AIR Ritual – From Flat to Phat workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join University of Westminster’s Fine Art Mixed Media group for an exploration of inflatables – what happens when air is the main actor?\n\n\nAbout the event \nTake a moment to explore what happens to light\, ephemeral materials when air becomes the main actant. Ask questions of materials: How large can they go – how small and light could they be – can they float can they fly can they hold heavy objects? If lines are drawn on the flat materials what happens to lines when they become air filled objects. Can these potential objects be ‘performed’ to fill them with air? \nAbout the organisers \nUniversity of Westminster’s innovative Fine Art Mixed Media BA gives students the opportunity to explore and develop work across boundaries\, within the ever-expanding contemporary fine art disciplines. \n \nBrent Biennial 2025: AIR Ritual \nEach breath is a new possibility of life. Inhalation and exhalation as cycles of existence. Air is also the catalytic substance of ignition; it represents the power of utterance; declaration\, song\, whistles\, chants\, spells\, of mobilising ideas and knowledge\, people and animals. The intangible\, invisible force that creates changes in culture\, education\, legal systems\, religion and ideologies. \nAIR Ritual forms part of the programme for Brent Biennial 2025. Titled “Bones\, stones\, and calling the four elements”\, it seeks to invoke a communal spirit of gathering and imagining. Between June to October 2025 four ‘rituals’\, WATER (22 June)\, EARTH (24 July – 1 August) FIRE (26 September – 12 October) and AIR (17 -24 October) will unfold at four Brent sites – a public reservoir\, a park\, an old medical facility and a university campus. Located in the north and south of the borough — Harrow\, Wembley and Kilburn — the ‘rituals’ will feature artists presenting workshops\, talks\, performance and exhibition.

SUMMARY:Brent Biennial 2025: AIR Ritual – Breathing Space
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an open and dynamic participatory dialogue exploring the vital intersections of art\, wellbeing\, and collective care\n\n\nBreathing Space: Art\, Wellbeing\, and Collective Care \nJoin us for an open and dynamic dialogue exploring the vital intersections of art\, wellbeing\, and care\, as part of the Brent Biennial AIR Ritual programme. This special session brings together researchers from Arts\, Communication and Culture (ACC) and the Creative Health Initiative at the University of Westminster\, alongside artists and members of Northwick Park Hospital\, to share experiences and collectively imagine new possibilities for creative health. \nIn collaboration with The People Speak\, using their engaging participatory format Talkaoke\, everyone is invited to take a seat at the table. Through conversation\, storytelling\, and speculative thinking\, we will explore how art can nurture wellbeing\, transform care environments\, and build meaningful connections between individuals\, institutions\, and communities. \nThis event takes place in the FORUM\, University Of Westminster\, Harrow Campus. \nPlease note\, there will be a break for lunch at 1:00pm\, and the session will resume at 2:00pm. \n \nAbout Talkaoke \nTalkaoke is a live\, television-style talk show format developed by The People Speak collective. It’s a great way to connect with strangers and find out about the latest ideas people are talking about! Talkaoke host sits in the middle of an illuminated round table while participants sit around the outside\, discussing whatever topics emerge. It’s completely non-hierarchical – participants set the agenda by grabbing the microphone and sharing their views. Conversations can be topical\, funny\, deep\, or surreal\, creating an unexpected journey from subject to subject. Participants are invited to drop by for as long as they want and contribute to the conversation or just listen. Don’t worry if your thought is not fully formed – we will complete it together in the course of the session. You don’t have to agree with everybody – we welcome difference of perspectives and explore commonalities. \n \nAbout the organisers \nArts\, Communication and Culture (ACC) at the University of Westminster is a vibrant interdisciplinary research community dedicated to addressing the pressing challenges of our times. Our work spans critical issues such as systemic inequality\, democratic reform\, climate action\, care\, responsibility\, and the societal impact of technology. By fostering collaboration between researchers\, artists\, practitioners\, and communities\, we aim to bridge urgent real-world questions with innovative knowledge generated through the arts and humanities. Through this work\, we strive to cultivate spaces for dialogue\, reflection\, and collective action\, supporting new ways of living\, thinking\, and creating in a rapidly changing world. \nThe People Speak are a collective of artists and creative communicators based in London\, collaborating with partners in the UK and Europe. We have 28 years’ expertise in helping people to understand each other and collectively process the complexity of the world. We develop creative\, fun and engaging communication tools to repair the damaging impact of polarisation in society in a live – unmediated by AI\, technology way. For us\, conversation is a creative medium that leads to new ideas – not just means to share information\, knowledge and opinions. Creativity is a powerful and rebellious force necessary in areas that are not typically associated with creativity: science\, academic research\, public decision making\, community engagement. \nBrent Biennial 2025: AIR Ritual \nEach breath is a new possibility of life. SUMMARY:Poetry in Wembley: The Language of Care
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an evening with two award winning poets\, Caroline Smith & Erica Hesketh.\n\n\n Poetry Readings by two award winning poets\, Caroline Smith & Erica Hesketh.  \nPoetry about the end of life and the beginning. These poets write powerfully and movingly about the challenges of dementia and early motherhood. Their poetry finds the heartache and joy that will resonate with all those caring for loved ones. \nBycatch by Caroline Smith is published by Nine Arches Press in Autumn 2025. \n‘In Bycatch Caroline Smith has created a remarkable journal of care and its complex narratives\, composed throughout with striking clarity of image and compassionate observation. These finely resonant poems show us how the worlds of capacity and apparent incapacity exist all in the same moment – her ageing parents’ house ‘like an unlocked church’\, generous and vulnerable; her father’s shoe\, unrecognised by him\, ‘like a tugboat guiding him through the fog’; and most joyfully of all his un-anchored language ‘high up in the roof of the cloud forest/ broken free of the ground.’ Jane Draycott \nCaroline Smith lives in Wembley. She is author of ‘The Immigration Handbook‘ which was shortlisted for the Ted Hughes Award and translated into Italian. Widely published in journals and the recipient of many poetry prizes\, she is a 2025 Hawthornden Fellow. \n \nIn the Lily Room by Erica Hesketh was published by Nine Arches Press in Spring 2025 \n‘Medical misogyny\, birth trauma\, postnatal depression\, joy and boredom – all of this and more are held in place in these lyrical\, image-drenched poems as Hesketh expands our ideas and perceptions around what it means to be a mother.’ Kim Moore \nErica Hesketh is originally from Japan and Denmark she is now based in London. Her poetry has been commissioned by the Royal Festival hall\, Spread the Word and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Poet and editor\, she was previously Director of the Poetry Translation Centre.

SUMMARY:Willesden Green Coffee Morning: The history of women's football in the UK
DESCRIPTION:Phil Vasili will discuss the rise of women’s football\, the fifty year suppression and re-emergence as the epitome of ‘the beautiful game.\n\n\nIf the history of women’s football in the UK were made into a film\, it might resemble a dramatic story: a powerful\, confident new train racing forward\, while anxious railway executives\, threatened by this emerging force\, desperately try to tear up the tracks ahead. \nThis talk will examine the factors behind the rise and success of women’s football in the UK\, highlighting the remarkable achievements of the Lionesses. \nAbout the speaker \nPhil Vasili has been researching and writing about the history of football since the 1980s. Two of his books have been the subject of BBC documentaries and a drama. His play ‘Tull’ was staged at the Octagon Theatre\, Bolton and the Bernie Grant Centre\, Tottenham. Another ‘The Beautiful Game’ was the first play staged the Brent Civic Centre in 2014. \n \nThis event is part of the nationwide project Our Freedom Then and Now\, exploring the legacy of VE Day and VJ Day. In Brent this takes the form of a dynamic community programme jointly delivered by Brent Libraries\, Culture and Heritage and the Jason Roberts Foundation.

SUMMARY:Brent Biennial 2025: FIRE Ritual – "Curing the World? " with Alfredo Jaar
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an artist’s talk by Alfredo Jaar\, followed by a discussion with artists Abbas Zahedi\, Yarli Allison and curator Annie Jael Kwan\n\n\nAbout the event: \nAn evening of discussion\, reflection and renewal – an artist’s talk by Alfredo Jaar titled “Things Fall Apart\,” followed by “Curing the World?” a discussion between Jaar and artists Abbas Zahedi and Yarli Allison\, moderated by curator Annie Jael Kwan. \nThe Brent Biennial 2025 FIRE Ritual asks: what if art could burn away indifference\, cauterise wounds\, and spark renewal in a world ablaze? We live amid inflammation and exhaustion—bodies\, minds\, and ecosystems scorched by injustice\, overheated by grief. Yet in the embers and ashes\, art offers not a salve of false comfort\, but a vital force: reigniting\, enlivening\, repairing. \nThis gathering brings together Alfredo Jaar\, Abbas Zahedi\, and Yarli Allison\, three artists who offer art as a living agent—not a passive reflection\, but a fever\, medicine\, a call. \nFor more than forty years\, Alfredo Jaar has worked at the fault lines of ethics and representation\, asking how images and cultural gestures can cut through indifference\, disrupt power\, galvanise change\, and demand empathy. Abbas Zahedi constructs resonant social architectures – part ritual\, part encounter – that pulse with collective breath\, showing how art can hold fragility and translate it into forms of care. Yarli Allison crafts speculative worlds out of migration\, queerness\, biotech\, and digital entanglement\, where survival means weaving tenderness through precarity. \nTogether\, they refuse the snake-oil fantasy of easy cures. Instead\, they ask: can art’s true power lie in its ability to gather us\, to change us\, to imagine otherwise? \nThis event is not a prescription. It is a provocation\, a fire lit in common ground—inviting audiences to see care as resistance\, healing as insurgency\, and art as a force that might yet reshape the future. \n \nAbout the artists: \nAlfredo Jaar is an artist\, architect\, and filmmaker who lives and works in New York. His work has been shown extensively around the world. He has participated in the Biennales of Venice (1986\, 2007\, 2009\, 2013)\, Sao Paulo (1987\, 1989\, 2010\, 2021)\, and Gwangju (1995\, 2000\, 2020) as well as Documenta in Kassel (1987\, 2002). The artist has realized more than seventy five public interventions around the world. Over eighty monographic publications have been published about his work. His work can be found in most major museum collections worldwide. He received the Hiroshima Art Prize in 2018 and the Hasselblad Award in 2020. This year he was selected as the recipient of the 2025 Edward MacDowell Medal. \nAbbas Zahedi is an artist whose practice blends sound\, sculpture\, performance\, and social processes to explore memory\, identity\, and belonging. With a background in medicine from University College London and an MA from Central Saint Martins\, Zahedi’s work engages with systems of care\, thresholds of experience\, and the creation of communal spaces for dialogue. His projects often interweave personal narratives with broader collective concerns\, using sound and materiality as conduits for reflection and connection. Recent exhibitions include Tate Modern\, CAPC\, Bordeaux\, and East Side Projects\, Birmingham. In addition to his artistic practice\, Zahedi collaborates with musicians\, researchers\, and institutions to develop interdisciplinary projects that explore the intersections of art\, architecture\, and sonic culture. His work has been recognised with awards such as the Stanley Picker Fellowship\, 2024 and Frieze Artist Award\, 2022. \nAnnie Jael Kwan is an independent curator and researcher based in London. Her practice is located at the intersection of contemporary art\, cultural and pedagogical activism with an interest in archives\, feminist/queer and alternative knowledge\, collective relations\, sisterhood\, solidarity and spiritual justice. She is the Director of Something Human\, a curatorial initiative that launched the largest Southeast Asia Performance Collection in Europe at the Live Art Development Agency in 2017\, where she also leads Asia-Art-Activism\, which is an interdisciplinary and intergenerational network\, and is the founding council member of Asia Forum for the contemporary arts of Global Asias\, co-launched with the Bagri Foundation during the opening of the 59th Venice Biennale\, and presented with Asymmetry Art Foundation for the 60th Venice Biennale in 2024. Her curatorial projects include UnAuthorised Medium\, 2018 at Framer Framed (NL)\, Future Ages Will Wonder\, when she was the Curator-in-Residence at FACT Liverpool (2020-2022)\, and Noguchi Resonances for the Barbican Center (2021). She was also associate curator for Pera+Fauna+Flora\, collateral project for the 59th Venice Biennale\, and programme advisor for the 12th Seoul Mediacity Biennale (2023). She undertook the role of Curator of the Brent Biennial (2023-2025)\, and is also a techne scholar at CREAM (Centre for Research and Education in Arts and Media)\, University of Westminster. \nYarli Allison is a Canadian-born\, Hong Kongese art-worker based in London with an interdisciplinary approach traversing sculpture\, XR\, film\, drawings\, tattooing\, and performances. Yarli’s works were exhibited at Tai Kwun Contemporary Museum\, Barbican Centre\, Institute of Contemporary Arts: ICA London\, V&A Museum. Recent project grants were awarded to Yarli by the Arts Council England\, the Canadian Council for the Arts\, and the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. \nBrent Biennial 2025: FIRE Ritual \nFIRE Ritual takes place from 26 September to 12 October 2025. \nFire is a tool\, both revered and feared. A glowing hearth calls us home\, to safety and sustenance. Gentle embers create warmth\, while a blazing flame provides illumination and a force for change. Its power is exponential\, and the insurgencies and profligacies of fire threaten destruction. Fire symbolises the potential for creation and destruction. It challenges the notion that structures should last forever\, and instead speaks to transferences of im/materiality across dimensions. \nFIRE Ritual forms part of the programme for Brent Biennial 2025. Titled Bones\, stones\, and calling the four elements\, the Biennial is curated by Annie Jael Kwan\, and unfolds across a series of four elemental rituals – WATER\, EARTH\, FIRE and AIR – at four Brent sites – a public reservoir\, a park\, an old medical facility and a university campus. Located in the north and south of the borough— Harrow\, Wembley and Kilburn— the ‘rituals’ will feature artists presenting workshops\, talks\, performance and exhibition. \nThis event is hosted by CREAM (Centre for Research and Education in Art and Media)\, University of Westminster\, as part of Brent Biennial 2025. \nFIRE Ritual is presented by the Brent Biennial 2025\, with the support of Arts Council England\, Brent Council\, Canada Council for the Arts\, Hong Kong Arts Development Council\, Something Human\, and University of Westminster. \nFor more information visit : https://metrolandcultures.com/events/brent-biennial-2025/ \n \nImage: © Alfredo Jaar

SUMMARY:Brent Biennial 2025: FIRE Ritual - Embers of Light
DESCRIPTION:Explore transformation\, trust and impermanance through lumen printing—an alternative photographic technique – with artist Xinyue Tao\n\n\nAbout the workshop \nAs part of Brent Biennial 2025: Bones\, Stones and Calling the Four Elements\, we gather in a Fire Ritual to explore transformation through the lumen print process—an alternative photographic technique where objects are placed on light-sensitive paper and exposed to sunlight\, leaving ephemeral traces shaped by light and heat. \nBeginning with a meditation on fire as warmth\, energy\, and renewal\, we choose intuitively from materials connected to the four elements. Placed on the paper and exposed to sunlight\, these materials mark their fleeting presence. \nTogether we witness images appear\, shift\, and slowly fade. This impermanence becomes the essence of our ritual: a cycle of ignition\, manifestation\, disappearance\, and renewal. What remains is not permanence\, but resonance—an inner fire carried forward. We take our prints with us\, allowing them to keep transforming\, and continue the practice of presence\, trust\, and impermanence beyond the workshop. \n \nAbout the artist \nXinyue Tao (b.1998\, Kunming\, China) is a London-based artist whose practice explores the subjective perception of time and space through self-identity\, memory\, and the unconscious. Guided by intuition\, her work is primarily rooted in photography\, while also extending into performance\, installation\, and experimental forms. She engages deeply with darkroom printing and alternative photographic processes\, integrating light-sensitive materials and slow\, embodied methods into her image-making. Tao also embraces collaboration as a working method\, co-creating interdisciplinary works and initiating community-based workshops that foster dialogue\, shared experiences\, and connections. She is dedicated to creating fields of resonance where deep connections can emerge through artistic engagement. \nFIRE Ritual is presented by the Brent Biennial 2025\, with the support of Arts Council England\, Brent Council\, Canada Council for the Arts\, Granville Community Kitchen\, Hong Kong Arts Development Council\, K2K Radio\, Kilburn Square Housing Co-op\, Something Human\, University of Westminster\, and Wing Yip. \nFor more information visit : https://metrolandcultures.com/events/brent-biennial-2025/
