SUMMARY:Kingsbury Coffee Morning: Memoir from Mugsborough
DESCRIPTION:Memoir from Mugsborough – a personal look at Robert Tressell and his book “The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists”.\n\n\nWell-known Brent local historian\, Philip Grant\, takes us back to his home town of “Mugsborough”\, as it was called in the novel written in and about the town during the first decade of the 20th century. \nThe book tells the story of life as experienced by the author and his workmates (the unwitting philanthropists of the title)\, when men in the building trade earned barely enough to live on\, and if you were out of work your family could go hungry. It is also the fascinating story of Tressell himself (not his real surname)\, of places in the town that still appear exactly as they were in the novel\, and how the book came to be published\, but only after Tressell’s early death. \nThe National Year of Reading 2026 is an ideal time to rediscover “The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists”. It is a book everyone should read at least once in their life\, and if you have not read it before\, this richly illustrated talk will encourage you to read it now\, either in its original text or in its modern graphic novel format.

Please book a ticket for each person coming in your group\, such as each of the brothers\, sisters and parents/carers. \nThere are accessible toilets in the Civic Centre on the Ground and First Floors. \nAll visitors to this special early opening will receive a visual story in advance to provide an idea of what to expect during the event. Please add the email address museum.archives@brent.gov.uk to your contacts to avoid the visual story email going to your junk folder by accident. \nIf you already have a library card you can use the computers from 9am. \nIf you book to come for the early opening you can join the library from 9.30am and use the computers from then. \nThe Children’s Library and the main library displays are open to the general public from 10.30am. \nDrop in \nFree \nAge range: 3 – 15 years \nIf you have any questions about this event\, please contact Jana Cameron\, Learning Officer at Brent Museum and Archives on 020 8937 3603 or 07909 007 182 or at jana.cameron@brent.gov.uk
