SUMMARY:Willesden Green Coffee Morning: The history of women's football in the UK
DESCRIPTION:Phil Vasili will discuss the rise of women’s football\, the fifty year suppression and re-emergence as the epitome of ‘the beautiful game.\n\n\nIf the history of women’s football in the UK were made into a film\, it might resemble a dramatic story: a powerful\, confident new train racing forward\, while anxious railway executives\, threatened by this emerging force\, desperately try to tear up the tracks ahead. \nThis talk will examine the factors behind the rise and success of women’s football in the UK\, highlighting the remarkable achievements of the Lionesses. \nAbout the speaker \nPhil Vasili has been researching and writing about the history of football since the 1980s. Two of his books have been the subject of BBC documentaries and a drama. His play ‘Tull’ was staged at the Octagon Theatre\, Bolton and the Bernie Grant Centre\, Tottenham. Another ‘The Beautiful Game’ was the first play staged the Brent Civic Centre in 2014. \n \nThis event is part of the nationwide project Our Freedom Then and Now\, exploring the legacy of VE Day and VJ Day. In Brent this takes the form of a dynamic community programme jointly delivered by Brent Libraries\, Culture and Heritage and the Jason Roberts Foundation.

SUMMARY:Come See the Empire
DESCRIPTION:Reflecting on the British Empire Exhibition and Its Modern Legacy.\n\n\nLisa Lu from Eclectic Tours was successful in her application to the Becoming Brent Community Fund (funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.) \nJoin Lisa as she shares her latest research on the British Empire Exhibition which took place in Wembley. Lisa says: \n \nThe British Empire Exhibition was designed as an opportunity for the average person or family in 1924 to experience the wonders of the British Empire\, but not have to travel any farther than to Wembley to do so. One hundred years on\, many Brits have travelled to various places that were once part of the Empire. Many were born or have families in former colonial countries and go back and forth there frequently. Today\, these countries are no longer far away\, unknown\, exotic places – and neither are their peoples or their cultures. How does the past view of the Empire line up with current reality of former colonial countries? How do these countries see themselves\, and what do they want to show the world about themselves? \n \nThe talk will serve as a continuation of the conversation around this historic event\, exploring its origins\, goals\, and how former colonial nations present themselves today. By comparing the Exhibition’s narrative with contemporary perspectives\, the talk aims to encourage reflection on Britain’s colonial legacy\, its impact on Brent\, and broader global implications. \nThere a chance to see Brent Museum’s community-led exhibition about the British Empire Exhibition “Revisiting the British Empire Exhibition 100 Years On” which is on display at the library until 17 August. Attendees can share their own experiences and impressions of former British colonies\, promoting dialogue and critical thinking around the concepts of decolonisation\, migration\, and heritage. \nYou can book on this Eventbrite page of visit Come See the Empire Eclectic Tours \nFor further informatin\, please contact: Lisa Lu at Eclectic Tours: info@eclectic-tours.com \nSocials: Instagram: @eclectic_tours Facebook: @eclectic.tours.london

SUMMARY:Revisiting the British Empire Exhibition 100 Years On
DESCRIPTION:A Community-led response to one of the least talked about events held at Wembley.\n\n\nLocal Voices Reframe the British Empire in New Exhibition at Brent Museum and Archives \nA powerful new exhibition at Brent Museum and Archives showcases the work of local volunteers who have re-examined the legacy of the 1924 and 1925 British Empire Exhibition through essays. Developed as part of the Becoming Brent project\, this community-led initiative uses archival research\, oral history\, and hands-on creativity to confront colonial narratives and reimagine how Brent’s imperial past is remembered today. \nThrough a series of reflective essays\, collaged postcards\, volunteers have created a bold counter-archive that puts community voices at the heart of heritage. Their work reveals how history can be reinterpreted from the ground up — not only in institutions\, but in streets\, memory\, and lived experience. \nThe exhibition invites visitors to explore a more inclusive\, challenging\, and participatory approach to public history — one that amplifies stories often overlooked in traditional narratives. \nBecoming Brent: Revisiting the British Empire Exhibition 100 Years On runs at Brent Museum and Archives until the 17th August 2025 and is free to visit. \n \n\nTime: Monday to Friday: 10:30am to 8pm. Saturday: 10:30am to 5pm. Sunday: 12pm to 5pm.\nVenue: The Library at Willesden Green. 95 High Road\, Willesden. NW10 2SF.\n\nPlease feedback too. Your input is invaluable as we work to create a dynamic\, inclusive\, and thought-provoking initiative called\, Becoming Brent.

DESCRIPTION:A thought-provoking panel discussion exploring art\, migration\, and identity in London.\n\n\nBecoming Brent presents: \nStrangers in London: Art\, Migration\, and the Shaping of Identity \nJoin us for a thought-provoking panel discussion exploring art\, migration\, and identity in London — inspired by “Strangers\,” a book by Tate Publishing by Ismail Einashe which explores art through the lens of migration. The discussion will be moderated by Louise Benson\, Director of Digital at ArtReview. Together\, they will delve into how art\, migration\, and identity continue to shape London and its communities. \nSPEAKERS \nISMAIL EINASHE \nJournalist and writer \nIsmail Einashe is a journalist and writer whose work on migration and refugee issues has won multiple awards.
