SUMMARY:Revisiting the British Empire Exhibition 100 Years On
DESCRIPTION:A Community-led response to one of the least talked about events held at Wembley.\n\n\nLocal Voices Reframe the British Empire in New Exhibition at Brent Museum and Archives \nA powerful new exhibition at Brent Museum and Archives showcases the work of local volunteers who have re-examined the legacy of the 1924 and 1925 British Empire Exhibition through essays. Developed as part of the Becoming Brent project\, this community-led initiative uses archival research\, oral history\, and hands-on creativity to confront colonial narratives and reimagine how Brent’s imperial past is remembered today. \nThrough a series of reflective essays\, collaged postcards\, volunteers have created a bold counter-archive that puts community voices at the heart of heritage. Their work reveals how history can be reinterpreted from the ground up — not only in institutions\, but in streets\, memory\, and lived experience. \nThe exhibition invites visitors to explore a more inclusive\, challenging\, and participatory approach to public history — one that amplifies stories often overlooked in traditional narratives. \nBecoming Brent: Revisiting the British Empire Exhibition 100 Years On runs at Brent Museum and Archives until the 17th August 2025 and is free to visit. \n \n\nTime: Monday to Friday: 10:30am to 8pm. Saturday: 10:30am to 5pm. Sunday: 12pm to 5pm.\nVenue: The Library at Willesden Green. 95 High Road\, Willesden. NW10 2SF.\n\nPlease feedback too. Your input is invaluable as we work to create a dynamic\, inclusive\, and thought-provoking initiative called\, Becoming Brent.

SUMMARY:Strangers in London: Art\, Migration\, and the Shaping of Identity
DESCRIPTION:A thought-provoking panel discussion exploring art\, migration\, and identity in London.\n\n\nBecoming Brent presents: \nStrangers in London: Art\, Migration\, and the Shaping of Identity \nJoin us for a thought-provoking panel discussion exploring art\, migration\, and identity in London — inspired by “Strangers\,” a book by Tate Publishing by Ismail Einashe which explores art through the lens of migration. We will discuss how notions of belonging have shaped places like Brent and how movement across borders has influenced London’s cultural fabric. \nThis timely conversation will bring together journalist and writer Ismail Einashe with Gilane Tawadros\, Director of the Whitechapel Gallery\, and Ornella Mutoni\, a documentary filmmaker and producer. The discussion will be moderated by Louise Benson\, Director of Digital at ArtReview. Together\, they will delve into how art\, migration\, and identity continue to shape London and its communities. \nSPEAKERS \nISMAIL EINASHE \nJournalist and writer \nIsmail Einashe is a journalist and writer whose work on migration and refugee issues has won multiple awards. He has written for numerous publications\, including The Guardian\, BBC News\, Foreign Policy\, The Sunday Times\, The New York Times\, The Nation\, ArtReview and Frieze. He is the author of Strangers (2023)\, a book by Tate Publishing which explores migration through the lens of art. Her directorial debut The Things We Don’t Say (2024) premiered at Aesthetica Short Film Festival in November 2024 and was distributed by the Guardian. She has extensive experience working in prime-time broadcast TV and video journalism for award-winning production companies such as Lightbox\, Hidden Light and Acme TV. Previously she was Deputy Editor at Elephant\, and before that was Editor-in-Chief of POSTmatter\, a magazine about modern life and culture in the digital age. As a writer she is interested in exploring what happens at the edges of the art world\, going behind the scenes to hear the stories of those who play a crucial role in the production of art but who often remain invisible. She is interested in how art gets made\, and in who gets to make it at all. She is also the co-founder of Scenic Views\, an independent interiors magazine focused on overlooked design histories.

SUMMARY:George the Poet
DESCRIPTION:Track Record: Me\, Music and the War on Blackness\n\n\nIn Conversation with\, George the Poet \nCome join us for an unforgettable afternoon with the talented George the Poet at The Library at Willesden Green. \nThis in-person event is an opportunity to hear more about George’s book\, ‘Track Record’ and experience thought-provoking conversation\, performance and poetry up close. \nBorn on St Raphael’s Estate in Neasden\, George Mpanga\, aka George the Poet\, draws inspiration from his community\, which shaped his artistry. \nIn ‘Track Record\,’ George confronts colonialism’s history and capitalism’s racial legacy as he talks to Nadia Khan from Golden Threads about the forces limiting Black creativity and excellence. \nDon’t miss out on this chance to witness George the Poet in action! \n‘Track Record’ by George the Poet was published by Hodder & Stoughton on 25 April 2024 and is available\, along with other resources\, at Brent libraries. \nThis event is part of Becoming Brent. \nBecoming Brent\, 2024 and 2025 \nThanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Brent Council\, Becoming Brent offers a unique opportunity in the anniversary moment of the British Empire Exhibition\, 1924 and 1925. \nOver the next two years\, Brent has a chance to pause\, reflect and redress the ongoing impact of the British Empire on the borough. Whether you’re a local looking to connect with your roots or a visitor eager to explore a new area and its lesser known histories\, Becoming Brent is perfect for anyone interested in heritage\, history\, learning\, activism\, community\, and all the wards of Brent. Come and share your stories and dive into the stories of other people and discover the rich tapestry that makes up this vibrant area. \nFor more information about the overall project\, an article in the summer 2024 edition of “Your Brent” magazine called\, “The long road to Becoming Brent” and the project’s press release from May 2024 called\, “Trauma and legacy of the British Empire set to be explored” will provide more context. \nBecoming Brent is Becoming… Alperton\, Barnhill\, Brondesbury Park\, Dollis Hill\, Dudden Hill\, Fryent\, Harlesden\, Kensal\, Green\, Kenton\, Kilburn\, Mapesbury\, Northwick Park\, Preston\, Queens Park\, Queensbury\, Stonebridge\, Sudbury\, Tokyngton\, Welsh Harp\, Wembley Central\, Willesden Green and Cricklewood & Mapesbury. \n \nBiographies \nGeorge the Poet \nGeorge the Poet is a London-born spoken word performer of Ugandan heritage. His innovative brand of musical poetry has won him critical acclaim both as a recording artist and a social commentator. \nHe is suspicious of superstar musicians who adopt a revolutionary pose but don’t seem to follow through on the ground. “We all had record deals at some point. We all had fame and ratings and commercial opportunities. But if you get to that point\, and you notice that the upward trajectory of your career in no way reflects the condition of your community\, you have decisions to make.” \nTrack Record is as much about Mpanga contending with white supremacy and capitalist ideologies as it is about him coming of age. Now that he is a father\, he has been forced to reflect on his early years\, the decisions he’s proud of\, and the ones he regrets. Mpanga owns up to his mistakes. In the past\, he says\, he failed to focus on the bigger picture but “I empathise with the young man that I was\,” he says. “I don’t think I was disingenuous. I was never perfect.” (interview for The Guradian newspaper\, 20 Apr 2024) \nNadia Khan \nNadia is a writer\, historian and Accredited PR professional. She has a BA (Hons) in History from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) and an MA in History from University College London (UCL). \nPassionate about addressing issues of inequality and exclusion for socially deprived and minority communities\, Nadia challenges racism and Islamophobia. \nIn 2020\, Nadia founded Golden Threads which is a project to explore and document shared histories across the Muslim world and beyond.
