SUMMARY:Brent Views: Shaping the Legacy of the British Empire Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Join us to hear more about our work with Becoming Brent and share your perspective on Brent’s British Empire Exhibition Collection!\n\n\nDid you know that the British Empire Exhibition of 1924 and 1925 took place right here in Brent\, at what was then known as “Empire Stadium”? Today\, Brent Museum and Archive holds over 400 items from this historical event. \nThe British Empire Exhibition (BEE) was the largest of its kind\, celebrating Britain’s colonial empire and displaying the countries\, resources\, and people under British rule. Now\, it’s time to re-examine this history through your eyes. \nAs we approach the 100th anniversary of the BEE\, we invite you to question this collection with us. Which stories do we need to uncover and tell? How can we ensure these artefacts reflect the diverse memories and perspectives of our community? \nJoin us on Thursday\, 26 September\, from 5-8pm for a special event where you can view some of the collection and learn more about Becoming Brent—a project dedicated to revisiting Brent’s BEE collections. We want to hear your thoughts\, so come and share your views with us. \nDon’t miss this chance to shape how Brent Museum approaches this important part of our history! \n \nPROGRAMME \n5pm: Welcome \n5:20pm: Introducing Becoming Brent \n5:45pm: Q&A \n6pm: Roundtable discussions \n7pm: Open floor \n7:30pm: Chat to the team and view the collection \n \nLocation: temporary exhibition space\, Second floor\, Willesden Green Library. Wheelchair accessible\, lifts available. \n \nTea and coffee provided

SUMMARY:Sophia: A screening
DESCRIPTION:The film\, Sophia looks at the life of Asian suffragette\, Sophia Duleep Singh and her passionate fight for the rights of all women to vote.\n\n\nAs part of South Asian Heritage Month (18 July – 17 August) celebrations we are pleased to present a screening of Sophia\, a film/theatre hybrid\, filmed at London’s legendary Arcola Theatre durring lockdown. \n The film looks at the life of Asian suffragette\, Sophia Duleep Singh and her passionate fight for the rights of all women to vote. Sophia was the daughter of the last Sikh Maharaja Duleep Singh\, whose empire was virtually stolen by the British. \nSophia ironically went on to become the goddaughter of Queen Victoria and instead of becoming embittered by the treatment of her father\, she went on to fight for the voting rights of all women. \nSophia\, was originally written as a podcast\, part of the Forgotten Women podcast series. Subsequently adapted for the stage\, Sophia highlights how far women have come and how important it is to guard these hard won freedoms. \nProduced and written by Beverly Andrews \nDirected by Abigail Pickard Price \nProduced by Circles Productions \nTrailer – Sophia trailer – YouTube \nFunded by the Arts Council of England. \nEvent accessibility \nThe Library at Willesden Green is a fully accessible building with accessible toilets. \nThere is no car park.
