Edward Tull-Warnock

Author Phil Vasili will be discussing about Edward Tull-Warnock Glasgow’s first Black dentist, footballer and socialist NHS pioneer.

An orphan adopted by a Glasgow couple, Edward Tull-Warnock was descended from enslaved Bajians. A pioneering dental surgeon and member of the Royal Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow he was also a champion golfer and played football for various teams including Ayr Parkhouse. A renowned singer of ‘Negro Spirituals’, a campaigner for the National Health Service and a member of the Socialist Medical Association, Edward’s life embodies the Black Atlantic history of the Caribbean diaspora in the UK.

About the speaker:

Phil Vasili was born in London but grew up in Cambridge. He now lives back in Kentish Town, London very close to where he was born. As a boy he dreamed of becoming a professional footballer.

Writing, like football, is a passion he has had since childhood. Unable to separate his obsessions he writes mainly about footballers, having had published two biographies and a social history.
