Harmful practices awareness training

The Gender Equality Network and Community Safety Team invite you to a half day training online on Honour Based Abuse and Female Genital Mutilation on Tuesday 3rd September 2024

The aim of the training is to raise awareness and improve the way in which professionals respond to Harmful Practices. A primary focus will be on identifying risk factors, early intervention and preventative strategies, implementing safeguarding measures, and effective multi-agency collaboration.

The session will be run by esteemed trainer, Bal Howard, who has been advocating on the issues of marginalised women and men on domestic abuse, honour based crimes (Forced Marriage & Female Genital Mutilation) since 2008. Bal Howard brings invaluable expertise and personal experience to this critical topic.

By upskilling and becoming more aware of Harmful Practices, we can protect vulnerable residents in Brent and create a safer society.

The training will cover the following:

Honour Based Abuse:

· the context of Domestic Abuse & so -called Honour Based Abuse

· the definitions of Honour Based Abuse/Forced Marriage & Government / Policing Strategy

· the differences between Arranged / Forced Marriage & why they happen

· the risk indicators / triggers why an individual may suffer Honour Based Abuse / Forced Marriage

to challenge community/cultural beliefs

Female Genital Mutilation:

· the definitions of Female Genital Mutilation & misconceptions of why families practice FGM

· the types of FGM and potential community issues

· the impact of health on FGM for victims, including children – Survivor Stories

· to identify risk indicators before / after FGM has taken place

· understand the Legislation – Mandatory Reporting / FGM Protection Orders
