Let’s dance – West Africa & the Caribbean

17 October, 2024 @ 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm
For Black History Month, come and take part in a lively exploration of movement influenced by traditional West African and Caribbean dance.

In this class you will get the chance to dance with Tanya Campbell to West African and Caribbean rhythms and try out different moves from these parts of the world.

The session is open to all levels, is intergenerational (age 16+) and will focus participants’ attention on their rhythm, musicality and self -expression. In the session, participants will dance to traditional drumming (and a little bit of Jazz) from the Caribbean and West Africa , try out some dance moves and practise a short, fun choreography.

Come in light, comfortable clothing, barefoot or wearing sports shoes.

About the facilitator

Tanya is a firm believer in the benefits of dance on our wellbeing and sense of identity. She believes dance brings people together, uniting generations and genders, and gives us the tools to express all aspects of our lived experiences whether that be our daily customs and relationships with others, extravagant celebrations, poignant occasions, or life-changing rites of passage.

She has enjoyed being a student for several years with some of the UK’s leading West African dance artists, including Nii Tagoe (Ghana), Aida Diop (Senegal) and Salif Camara (Guinea).

Tanya is also a huge advocate of Caribbean traditional dance and Orisha dances, as well as the informal Black British /Caribbean dance styles that she acquired from growing up in a family where music and movement were staples of family life.

Event accessibility

The Library at Willesden Green is a fully accessible building with accessible toilets.

There is no car park.
