29 October, 2025 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Examine how children’s literature has influenced and shaped prevailing attitudes towards people of colour in children’s publishing
Drawing on his long running Books for Keeps column and critically-acclaimed book, both co-authored with Professor Karen Sands O’Connor, Dr Darren Chetty traces how Black and racially minoritised characters have been represented in ‘the secret garden’ of British children’s literature from its earliest stages.
This event will examine how children’s literature has both been shaped by, and shaped, prevailing attitudes towards people of colour, he explores recent developments in children’s publishing and what the future might hold.
Part of The Library at Willesden Green’s Black History Month event series.
